This is Day One of a two-day hike in the Meaford area. We drive up on Saturday morning and check in to the Meaford Motel, where Peter, the kindly proprietor is letting us check in early and plug our crockpot in in the motel kitchen.

It’s a grey and wet day, and the hike begins with a muddy ascent up a rutted road to the start of the trail. Even though the rain is tapering off, there’s no hope of staying clean and dry.

This hike features an unusual amount of animal life – wild and domesticated. In addition to the rather normal cows, we encounter a fox in a farmer’s field and a pasture with a friendly horse (who likes apples) and an inquisitive alpaca.

It's one of our longish treks but close to 10 km is on the road so we make good time.

Near the end of the hike, we reach the Lloyd Laycock Cave Side Trail. It’s not much of a detour so we take it, and we’re glad we did. We need to use the flashlights on our phones to navigate our way through pitch blackness. Spooky but very cool!

Simon, make sure you do this hike!
